dirty resilience, beautiful mess

My arm reaches out to a green lichen,
I pick it up
and it slowly starts growing in my mind.

Lichen live in rhythms of wetting and drying.
With a string I bind them together
I wet a paint brush,
lichen soak up paint water,
acrylic dries,
water dripping on paper.

Sometimes it’s chaotic, cloudy, full of dirt, soil
but in the middle of that all,
in between the corners,
something fragile is growing.

Lichen and moss paint the city with their presence.
I want to make paint out of living moss. Will it grow?

Uncomfortable out of its natural habitat,
the moss didn’t want to grow.

Always looking for ways to connect,
I imagined the moss and paint intertwine on canvas,
growing towards each other.
